Last year EWB took a group of 5 grade 10 learners from Kayamandi High who had a passion for renewable energy, maths and science and taught them how to build their very own portable solar generator. The generators themselves were designed by a 3rd Year Electrical and Electronic Engineer (previous Chair EWB-Maties: Julian Daniels) with the aim of allowing the students to be able to use the generator to power a reading lamp or charge a cell phone. (etc.)
Lessons with the students on what renewable energy is, why it’s important, how to use electrical equipment, and demonstrations on how to build the generator was designed and facilitated by our members, however, the students physically built the generators themselves, with our members overseeing the process.
