Design-a-Difference is a programme which consists of EWB-SA projects that all share one characteristic: they are project managed by either internal EWB-SA people, or Tier 1 volunteers at EWB-SA.

Most EWB-SA projects are project managed by Chapters, on a voluntary basis. We’ve learnt that of these projects, the ones that succeed have focused and time-intensive project management. By providing internal project management, or Tier 1 Volunteer driven project management, we intend to provide much more time and focus to specifically selected projects.

The big idea behind increased time and focus is to deliver high-quality projects within shorter time frames to under-served communities.

The Design a Difference programme is also designed to involve EWB-SA’s graduate and professional membership in challenging and socially-relevant work. We believe that the depth of skill available in our professional membership can be channeled via _focused_ project managed to be of service to under-served communities.

Launched in November 2019, the programme is new and a very small part of the broader EWB-SA world. We are excited to test if this idea finds traction! The first project within the Design-a-Difference programme is a really cool one that focuses on using bicycles to increase the mobility of a community in urban Johannesburg. See more below.

How might bicycles be used to increase the mobility of people living and working in Maker’s Valley?

That’s the design question in the “Bicycles in MV” project. Continuing EWBSA’s relationship with Makers Valley (via the Maker’s Valley Partnership), we intend to design solutions that make use of bicycles to help people in Maker’s Valley get around more easily. Click through to the project page to learn more.
